France has very strict and carefully controlled product quality legislation for its wines, if they meet the stringent requirements they are granted an AOC - Appellation d' Origine Protégée. Currently there are four categories, this however will change in 2012 when wine will be classified into three categories:
• Vin de France - a table wine category that will replace the current Vin de Table, but allowing grape variety and vintage to be indicated on the label
• Indication Géographique Protégée -IGP, an intermediate category replacing the current Vin de Pays.
• Appellation d' Origine Protégée - AOP, the highest category basically replacing AOC wines.
All common styles of wine – red, rosé,white (dry, semi, and sweet), sparkling and fortified are produced in France and range from inexpensive versions to some of the worlds most expensive and coveted brands.
Generally they are branded by regions, Bordeaux, Cahors, Champagne, Languedoc for example. Quality and prices vary enormously – some wines are available for immediate consumption whilst others have to be 'cellared' for some time to correctly mature.
In general grape varieties are associated with a defined region such as Syrah in The Rhone and Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux - however there are some varieties associated with multiple regions – Sauvignon Blanc for example which can be found in Loire and Bordeaux.
Having said that the underlying natural factors such as soil types, climate, humidity, landscapes – or terroir – has an important impact upon the flavour of the wine – therefore the same grape variety being planted in two different terroirs will produce wine that will be significantly different.
The most popular grape varieties, in order of percentage of land cover are:
• Merlot
• Grenache
• Ugni Blanc
• Syrah
• Carignan
• Cabernet Sauvignon
• Chardonnay
