  Spanish wine order
Spain has the worlds largest land area planted with vines and is currently the third largest producer of wine. This lower yield is caused partly through the wider spacing of the old vines (lower density planting to avoid the vines competing for resources )planted on the dry, infertile soils found in many of the wine regions.

There are over 400 native varieties of vines although the majority of the wine produced use a popular selection of approx. 20 varieties, including Macebo, Parellada, Garnacha, Monastrell, Tempranillo, Xarel.lo.

Spain has, as in France a strict regulatory body ensuring that the quality of the wine is maintained and wines are granted DO - Denominación de Origen. This is operated on a similar basis to the AOC – Appellation d' Origine Protégée, there are currently five distinct groups within the DO, including Vino de Mesa and Vino de la Tierra.
